We do SEO, and don't make a 'number 1' claim very often, depends on the keyword/phrase you are targetting - would be easy with some, virtually impossible with others! Normally aim for 'first page' eg. top 10.

True. But there are lots of different keywords/phrases, it's not like everyone has to be ranked on the same ones. Also in practice, an SEO company doesn't tend to have the privilege of everyone in the same industry all coming to you, would be nice if they did.
In reality, it is a contest between a number of SEO firms, so may the best man win...
