Sky have outsourced their email to Google so he is infact already using the Google Mail platform. The Google Mail platform supports secure POP3, IMAP and SMTP so you can use whatever mail client you like.

When you send messages through the Google Mail SMTP server your Google account (whether that be your Gmail account or your Sky account) details will be appended to the email as the "sender" for tracking purposes. Some mail clients decide to show this instead of the usual From, or show it in conjunction with the From (hence the "email-address-1 on behalf of email-address-2" message).
