I do recommend that too. Plus you will have a lot of SEO problems.

By hosting different content on same domain, you'll probably use a Javascript Technique (Google does not recognize it) to redirect the user after you check the IP. Google bot will not be redirected and it will only read the default content, and this is the Happy case.

If you use any kind of server redirect based on IP, when 2 different Google Bots access your page and let suppose they are one from USA and another one from UK they'll find different content. So how will choose Google the right content? It will ban the site

However if you redirect the UK user to a subdomain or folder called uk it COULD be fine...

Use different domains, is much better and you'll have full control on both sites so changes on the first will not affect the other.
