I'm aware that you can't use the free shared SSL that UH provides with php5 until you convert to php5 only in June.

Is there anyway around this (other than using php4?)...I don't really want to purchase my own SSL certs at the moment.

The "shared" ssl certificate will only currently work with PHP4 (the default instalation on the server), as far as I am aware no-one has found a suitable workaround to get it working with PHP5.

The shared SSL will only work with PHP4.

When we move to PHP5 in June, it will then work as normal.

Its just the temporary switchable PHP5 that does not, and will not work with the shared SSL. If there was a way we would have documented it for you.
