Can I delete these files?

First let me state that I've still not had a chance to do the research I need to do to fully understand my domain's file system which I find more than a bit baffling and so bear with me for what will probably turn out to be a very basic question...'-}}

I had created a new page for my website and was going to upload my new files when I discovered a rather lengthly list of files I'd never seen before.

The files are listed below the following directories (shown when I connect to my FTP server):

mail
mainwebsite_cgi
mainwebsite_html
mainwebsite_perl

Here are the first 4--there are over 1000 of them--and they are all squirrelmail files. I never use squirrelmail:

var_www_squirrelmail-data_default_pref.Thu_Apr_24_19:38:17_2008
var_www_squirrelmail_AUTHORS.Thu_Apr_24_19:38:17_2 008
var_www_squirrelmail_ChangeLog.locales.Thu_Apr_24_ 19:38:17_2008
var_www_squirrelmail_ChangeLog.Thu_Apr_24_19:38:17 _2008

What exactly are these files?

Can I delete them?

Thanks...

Terrie

The var_www_squirrelmail files should not exist. They are backup files from an upgrade. Could you please put a ticket into the helpdesk stating what server your on, we will then zap those files for you so they no longer exist.

Regarding the other 4 links ,these should be left in place, they are simply shortcuts to places of use on your account.

For example mainwebsite_html is a shortcut to /var/www/html/ where all the main files for your domain should exist.

I found a gazillion of these today when I connected with BBedit to make changes to a config.php file, so will also put in a ticket.

Thanks for asking the question, Terrie!

Hmm, just looked again with both BBEdit and Fetch, and the files are gone!

The files exist during updates, and when the update is completed they are removed. So on the night of your servers upgrade they will show up... then by 8am or 9am the next morning they will be gone.
