Please explain the tilde charachter ~

Hi,

I am a little puzzled about the tilde charachter " ~ " that is meant to appear in some url's, especially before name servers have been transferred across and testing is occurring etc.

Is this charachter necessary?

For example:

http://merlin.xssl.net/mysite.co.uk/ [without the tilde]

seems to work just as well as:

http://merlin.xssl.net/~mysite.co.uk/ [with the tilde]

What is technically correct and could you give a simple explanation please?

Thanks.

Colin - a novice

If you're using the preview URL with the domain name then the tilde is NOT required.

Hi Simon,

Thanks for the reply, but I don't fully understand what you mean?

Is it necessary (the tilde ~ symbol) at any time or can I just ignore it?

I'd hate to think I understand something when I don't really.

Is it possible to re-clarify this for a dumbo (me)?

Regards,
Colin

You don't need the tilde symbol. It can be used, but not necessary. I believe the tilde gets added automatically to the preview URL anyway whether you add it or not.

Most things will work with and without the tilde.

Generally people prefer to use the tilde to seperate the fact that your looking at a different users own html folder (example: www.domain.com/~someuser/) than just a folder of the main website (example: www.domain.com/forum/).

With or without can purely be your own style
