IMAP Nightmares

I have a client, she has a mac running mac mail on osx 10.5.7. She has an iPhone with latest firmware. She has email with me here on UH. I have a mac and an iPhone all the same as hers with my email on here. I have followed advice and set the email clients up to use IMAP. Often I get a few emails reappearing in my inbox after i've read them, moved them or deleted them. I can live with it as it's only a few emails. She is driving me nuts because she gets hundreds of emails which she diligently files away, deletes etc. Then they all flood back in to her inbox and she is ready to top herself (and probably me too).

Anyone experiencing this? Anyone save me from an early grave?

I'm not familiar with Mac but it sounds like the software is not deleting emails from the actual server.. It will be in the advanced settings somewhere.

I have a UH email account and an Apple .ME account, both are IMAP, both have the same settings and advanced settings yet the UH email constantly redelivers email to me (and more importantly to my client who has similar setup)

If you delete an email in the squirrelmail webmail, does that get redelivered again? Squirrelmail is only IMAP as well, so is a good parallel to compare with the behaviour of your Mac client in order to fix the issue.

I will test and let you know

If I delete a message from Squirrelmail and resync my mail client I would expect the message to go from my client but it doesn't. Is this normal?

Still it remains unsolved....

These two pics show the settings for my IMAP client. Emails still come back in when read, moved or deleted. Not all of them, but enough to be annoying.

IMAP on apple Mail and iPhone

Hi,

I am also getting probs with the IMAP service on apple mail. I can't add subfolders which is a right pain in the behind! I used to have 'Work' and 'Personal' folders. Then in 'Work' I have a sub folder for each client to organise stuff like this 'Client a', 'Client b', 'Client c' etc. I can't get this to work at all it will not work with subfolders. If I use Squirrelmail then all sorts of odd folders appear in the wrong places in apple mail. I also get the syncing issues on a second mac with the same account settings for the IMAP account!

Looks like the UH IMAP service is rubbish! Considering the premium on space that we pay I am not happy about this and may move service.

Anyone that can give help to resolve any of this would really be appreciated as I seem to have lost some important business emails too!

What makes you think the problem is with IMAP? Please contact support for assistance so we can help you diagnose the problem, IMAP and the server space is not likely causing the fault your seeing, so should not be automatically blamed.

Thank you,

Support for IMAP

I did contact support and went through several tests. In the end UH support said they dont have a Mac and it should work fine.

The thing is that I have a friend who uses several other different services and they all work fine with IMAP on mac Mail so we could only resolve that the IMAP server is an old version or something like that.

I think it would be helpful for your support to get a mac. They are getting more and more popular now especially the iphone side.

Are you checking your mail while Mail.app is open? I've experienced that Apple's Mail.app client sometimes doesn't communicate with the server after every change. Try quitting Mail.app before checking mail with any other client. This forces Mail.app to finalize all commands to the server.

When you say checking mail while Mail.app is open do you mean checking on my iPhone or on my second mac running Mail.app also?

I only had issues with pop for checking on multiple platforms thats why I went over to IMAP.

Still my main issue is with the subfolders and Mail.app

I mean checking email with other clients, such as your iPhone, while Mail.app is running.

Regarding subfolders, be sure you have "mail" as your prefix in the Advanced settings. See the image njc235 posted above.

Mail app setup

Ok so I had the settings with SSL off and 'INBOX' as the IMAP path prefix. I just changed it to 'mail' but now this has happened (I did try this before, see image attached).

So all the sent mail is in a new 'sent' folder instead of the one below the inbox where it should be. Same goes for Drafts and Trash.

My 'Personal' and 'Work' folders are empty but they should not be as I stored some email in them!

HELP!

In addition if I send email it now goes in the real 'Sent' box unter the inbox but a draft was unable to be created on the server so Mail.app said it would store drafts only localy

You have a couple of issues going on, and most of it is related to not putting in "mail" as the IMAP Path Prefix.

I have a feeling you have two copies of Personal and Work folders. One is under mail where it should be, and the other is under your home directory. If the ones under the mail directory are empty, you can overwrite them with the ones in your home directory.

This is kind of confusing and tough to describe, but let me try to explain. The best thing to do is connect to your server via FTP. CyberDuck is a good free ftp client. You should default to your home directory (/home/<YourUsername>).

From there, you should see several directories, including a "mail" directory. Before doing anything, you should back up your home folder in case you royally mess something up.

Basically, any directory you see under /home/<YourUsername> that should be an email folder, move under the "mail" directory. Then go back into Mail.app, making sure "mail" is your IMAP Path Prefix. Things should look pretty good.

To make the Sent, Drafts, and Trash folder appear and be used correctly, select the folder, then go to Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For

I hope this helps

iPhone mail + Mac Mail.app and IMAP

Hi, I seem to be getting somewhere but my iPhone is the problem now! I can't get email or more specifically I can't touch on the 'inbox' for this IMAP account as its greyed out. I thought it may be due to the 'Drafts (Taste Consultancy)' being inside it on the ftp but when I move 'Drafts (Taste Consultancy)' out of the INBOX folder the same thing happens only now my mail.app shows the 'Drafts (Taste Consultancy)' folder as you can see in the screenshot. Any ideas?

Your inbox should not be visible when you ftp and look under mail. The inbox is managed differently than the directories under mail. I think its actually the file mbox in your home folder, and definitely shouldn't be messed with.

My suggestion in my previous post was the easiest way to get your folders straightened out, but once things look good you should avoid messing with anything under your mail directory.

On your iPhone, once you have the account set up, go to to your mail account settings > Advanced and make sure 'mail' is the IMAP Path Prefix.

iPhone IMAP

I did do what you said with the folders. Here's how it looks on ftp (attached).
I had also set the IMAP up with the path 'mail' on both iPhone and mail.app.

As you can see, on the ftp, in the 'mail' folder there is an 'INBOX' which has nothing inside it. It used to have the 'drafts(taste consultancy)' file inside it, but I moved it up a level in an effort to get things working on the iPhone. It didn't work. The iPhone still has a greyed out 'INBOX'

I think you need to delete the INBOX folder.
