Tons of Bouced messages with Vacaction Enabled

I seem to be having some problems when I enable the vacation message on one of my clients. It was responding to everything, including spam. That was resulting in lots of "Mail Undeliverable" return notices from smtp servers. Resulting in MORE vacation messages, etc, in a nasty loop. In a single day I had over 300 messages.

Is this normal? Shouldn't vacation messages only reply to "valid" email addresses?

I believe it will reply to anything that is sent to the address, it cannot tell the difference between a spammer or a genuine contact.

But when it replies to a non-existant email, then it just keeps on bouncing back and forth?

And this is normal? Does anyone else notice this problem?

This is why I never set up auto-responders (vacation responder on UH servers) any more. The idea that computers are intelligent is a bad one. They only do what they're told to, and so you end up with autoresponders sending endless messages to each other. It can be a total nightmare! Rhea

There is an e-mail header that is generally added to auto-responder messages, the exact line escapes me now, which tells the receiving server that it is an automated message and should not be replied to -- so some wise man has thought of this, too. Of course, this is not very globally supported...

You should set return path to email account without autoresponder otherwise you get what you're getting now...

I have been used to Plesk cp, where you can set up an autoresponder which stores a copy of any mail (or forwards it) with extra parameters, such as toreply to any senders address once only. This stops continual cycling of emails which is bad for bandwidth and for the user. I have just noticed, thanks to this thread, that such a facility is missing on Ensim. This is bad.
