Angry A few questions

Hi

I’m currently with one&one who have closed my website down without warning because they say the server running my database is using too much recourse It’s a PHP BB with 700 regular members. If I move to you do you have ANY limits on the size of database or the amount of use it gets?

Another thing I need to know is if the site has a problem with the database do you restore the backup or is it left to me? Will I have full access to the backup files?

Regards
Colin

I'm sure UH will answer for themselves soon enough - but you may need a dedicated server if traffic is very high.

However, I have come across situations like this before with 1and1. What they consider to be extreme use others would consider moderate use. The fact is - they pack their servers to the brim with sites in hopes that most sites will be largely inactive. When you get one website that is very active it turns out to be "the straw that breaks the camels back".

Their servers are very slow at the best of times.

It just seems so unfair to have my community just switched off by a host. They don't define what unacceptable use is and I was on a professional package. You only find out when you lose your site without warning.

Well, it's like I mentioned - they hope most sites are fairly inactive. But when an active website comes along then offering that hosting package is, in hosting terms, extremely stupid.

For £30.00 per month they are offering 200Gbs of bandwidth - but if you use anything near that then you need your own dedicated server - full stop - no doubts about it.

A single website using up 200Gbs of bandwidth on a 1and 1 shared server, which is slow at the best of times, would consume so much resource that every other site on the server would slow down to a crawl or just crash completely.

Just been looking at the web stats & this is what they call unfair usage on a pro package. . .

8/6/2007 305.00MB
9/6/2007 283.00MB
10/6/2007 265.00MB
11/6/2007 344.00MB
12/6/2007 405.00MB
13/6/2007 353.00MB
14/6/2007 253.00MB
15/6/2007 296.00MB

Total 2,504.00MB

Does this seem excessive ?

Colin,

UH do have backups through their new backup system (sites are backed up 4 times per day and kept for 28(?) days). You should also make you own backups as UH wont guarantee theirs, but this is simple to do from the control panel.

Might be worth popping an email off to sales (sales@unitedhosting.co.uk) with you exact site specifics and they will advise you in more detail.

Regards,

Adam

With almost 2.5GB per week, I would probably say you need the Gold Hosting package, although you do really need to contact sales as Adam said so that they can give you advice specific to your account.

Simon

The transfer level does not seem unreasonably but the level of mysql activity could certainly effect whether your site is hostable in a shared environment. If you email sales@unitedhosting.co.uk we can then get a little more detail about your site and advise accordingly.
