My Pre Sale questions

Hi,
I've seen a lot of good press for you guys on certain sites, and you seem pretty professionsal.
However, I have a few questions before I 'Get out the green' per sé
  1. Do you have GD installed?
  2. Do you have CURL installed?
  3. Can I add PEAR modules, or are they all installed, or do I need to request them to be installed?
  4. Why is the Pegasus server showing as 100% online when it was offline for about an hour a day or two ago?
  5. Do you have a phpinfo page that I can look at?
  6. Are there any setup fees?
  7. Any limits as to wierhter I could start something such as a 'Free email' service on a reseller account?
  8. Weither if I were to purchase a custom plan, and purchased extra space that my 'Hostable Domains' number would increase?
  9. Wiether I could purchase extra domain addon ability (not excesive mind, just say 5-10 extra)
  10. Do you have any uptime garruntees of say 99.9% garrunteed?

Thanks, thats all my questions for now

Hi Alex:

Do you have GD installed?

Yes we do.

Do you have CURL installed?

Yes we do.

Can I add PEAR modules, or are they all installed, or do I need to request them to be installed?

Pear is installed, you need to request that we add libraries to it for you.

Why is the Pegasus server showing as 100% online when it was offline for about an hour a day or two ago?

I dont believe pegasus was offline for that long, you may be reading the announcement where the time between posts was that long, but I believe actual downtime was less than 10 minutes, and our public monitoring intervals did not pick this up (due to being 10 minute intervals). Our internal monitoring checks servers every 60 seconds making our reaction and resolution much quicker than downtime picked up on public reports.

Do you have a phpinfo page that I can look at?

Yes you can request one from sales, I would prefer not to make that public.

Are there any setup fees?

Only on dedicated servers, not for shared or reseller hosting.

Any limits as to wierhter I could start something such as a 'Free email' service on a reseller account?

You can do as you wish within our terms of service with your account, free email is acceptable. We do however monitor server resource usage and would let you know if your account become too busy in terms of cpu/memory resources for shared hosting.

Weither if I were to purchase a custom plan, and purchased extra space that my 'Hostable Domains' number would increase?

Yes, you can contact sales to discuss a custom plan as per our website.

Wiether I could purchase extra domain addon ability (not excesive mind, just say 5-10 extra)

Yes, you can contact sales to discuss a custom plan as per our website.

Do you have any uptime garruntees of say 99.9% garrunteed?

We dont provide any official guarantee, SLA and uptime guarantee's are not worth the paper they are written on, our uptime is superior to almost all our competitors and all we can do is promise to do our best and maintain the reliability that has allowed us to become the company we are today, unfortunately that doesnt extend to financial reward should something cause uptime to drop below the 99.99% we currently maintain.

This is one of the things I love about UH. As Matt says guarantees like this are worthless as no one can guarantee a computer being on all the time. But their uptime, and response times to any problems (be they server related or not) is fantastic. I would choose this over an guarantee a company can't keep.

Just my two pence/cents worth

An alternative you may want to consider for free email is the Google Apps which allows you to hand off the email handling for your domain to Google. You can then apparently brand, to a certain degree, the Google Mail interface. You can also control who can sign up or let people just do it I think.

Google Apps for Your Domain

Thanks for answering that quickly Matt.

@ Adam, Yes I know about Google apps I already use them, but people could just get a Gmail account couldn't they? Same features etc.
If I wanted to start an email service, I'd prefer to offer something unique.

A few more questions :
  1. Would I be able to switch between PHP 4 and 5 (I think I asked support that a while ago and they said yes..)
  2. Is there an API available for the Ensim reseller panel / user panel which would say allow someone to create things such as email accounts through a script, or would that not be available until the Pro X version is installed / Not be possible because of security?
  3. If I started with reseller, and used a domain I had as my nameservers, would it be possible to change the nameservers later on?
  4. If I needed a (stable) module / add-on for Apache or PHP installed in order for a script to run, would you be able to install it?
  5. I don't think is covered in your TOS, but do you allow proxies?

Hi Alex

Would I be able to switch between PHP 4 and 5 (I think I asked support that a while ago and they said yes..)

- No you cannot. Our shared/reseller servers offer PHP4. Dedicated servers can be configured to use either PHP4 or PHP5 for your sites.

Is there an API available for the Ensim reseller panel / user panel which would say allow someone to create things such as email accounts through a script, or would that not be available until the Pro X version is installed / Not be possible because of security?

- No there is not an API (and not on Pro x either). Dedicated server customers have root access to command line tools which can be developed to allow similar things. We have dedicated customers automating.

If I started with reseller, and used a domain I had as my nameservers, would it be possible to change the nameservers later on?

- Yes you can change nameservers later on.

If I needed a (stable) module / add-on for Apache or PHP installed in order for a script to run, would you be able to install it?

- If your a dedicated server customer yes, if your shared/reseller then no we have a default php build installed and you cannot have this changed as it would affect people you share the server with.

I don't think is covered in your TOS, but do you allow proxies?

- Again for dedicated servers you can, for shared/reseller no.

The questions you ask are very much leaning towards the flexibility of a dedicated server, you will find it very difficult to get a shared/reseller account allowing many of the things I answered no to, on any host.

Please contact our sales team to discuss anything further as it sounds like your requiring something quite custom so we would love to talk with you directly about those things.
