Hosting without Domain Name

Hi,

How long would you allow me to have webhosting without linking my domain name to it? ie just an IP address to access the website.

I want to change hosting to you but I would want to run the old site in parralel for perhaps a month/month and a half. The old site would still have all the visitors but I would be getting the site up and running on the new hosting before I pointed the domain name to UH and deleted the account with my old webhost providers.

I hope what I am saying is clear

You will need to make up a pretend domain name and signup with that, and select "DNS" next to it on the order. You will see a temporary web address in your welcome details which would be something like :

http://fencer.unitedhosting.co.uk/yourdomain.com

which you can use to visit your pages. We would recommend buying a domain though, and wont be able to fully support all our features if you choose to go without a domain (no email, subdomains, cgi scripting etc.. etc...).

For some reason the other topic was locked...

The two replies that were deleted gave me the answer that I wanted but I think you misunderstood me Matt.

I already have a domain name so I do not need to register one. I will point the domain name to the UH hosting after a while once I have transferred the site and made sure it all works correctly etc, which could take a while as I may have to modify php scripts etc....

When I sign up should I enter the domain name that I will be eventually pointing to the site in the domain name box on the registration form rather than "making one up" like you suggested...

Yes, enter the domain you wish to eventually point to the account. We will then set you up with that domain but you can begin using it and moving files before you eventually point the domain name to your hosting account. Sorry if I misunderstood and confused things.
