Accurate(ish) Stats?

anyone know of any web stats programs which I can run locally and which are more accurate than awstats.
I'm finding many cases of a visit generating 2 or 3 referer records from google with the same search key and awstats is counting them each time instead once for the visit which seems more logical. As a result awstats is giving a very false impression of the frequency of any search phrase.
I'm getting to the point of considering writing my own but that would be a big investment in time and effort. So whats the best one out there for running locally (not from UH servers)?

p.s. I know about google(urchin) but thats not local.

Any particular reason it must be local?

Speed is not important. Most stats packages for server seem to be designed for pure speed and not for accuracy.

1. download the access log and the awstats scripts then hack then code (shame it is Perl) to meet your needs;
2. theres some free php classes designed for this purpose, eg, Class: Apache Logs Reader - PHP Classes;
I haven't tried either of the two.

talking about the accuracy of awstats, i came across one case today in which awstats shows an ip address consumed 15MB bandwidth visiting 450 pages & having 450 hits in one visit this morning, which is quite unusual given that the site is far from busy, and all are small size pages generated from php scripts with very little images . so I decided to download the access.log from ensim panel and have a look. I did not see 450 pages that ip visited, the ip is not a bot from what i could see in th elog file as it shows th ebrowser version (IE 6). the ip is in fact from Spain. the whole log file is only 150KB recording activities from 4am to 8pm.
could anyone explain how awstats came up with that 15MB figure?

if its one of the ips listed under the hosts heading, then the bandwidth is the monthly cumulative figure so it will be over the last 19 days or so. That information will not be in the log file you downloaded as that only contains the current or previous days logs, I forget which. The date in awstats is just the date of the last visit and doesn't tell you which other days that ip visted. It would be useful if it told you how many visits that ip had made.

If you use ftp then you can get the previous 5 days logs and the current days log from var/log/httpd. Some of them are gzipped. That might shed a bit more light on it for you. Winzip will unzip gzip files.

well, i did think about that possibility, but in this occasion it is unlikely thats the case as i check awstats quite often and never notice an ip accumulating data access from a few MB to now 15MB, further more when i checked the ip location it did say dynamic ip something. also, it is rarely you got same page number with same number of hits, something i dont understand. i must say i am still learning about awstats, trying to make sense from what shows on it.
people keep mentioning 'var/log/httpd' but for me i never see anything under var/log/.

/var/log/httpd/ is a directory that you change into first. Once in there you will see the access and error logs.

I had a look around this morning and found this,

SmarterStats 3.2.2602 from download com

as it was free, it seemed to tick all the boxes and I downloaded it.

Ive since been reliably informed that the awstats is the tracker to go with but being new to UNITEDHOTING I cant make a judgement till I actually start driving traffic.
