Question SEO company???

I wonder if anyone has any experience of dealing/using one of these so called seo companies. for me, I always tend to take take it with a pinch of salt about claims of making a site to appear at top of google search results made by these companies.

The reason I have my very doubt on this so called seo 'service' is based on this scenario:

say I present myself as seo guru. there are scroes of online shops selling the same products. Igo to site A offering my seo service claiming to be able to make siteA at top of google search. I then also go to site B, which is of course a competitor of site A , C - Z, and offering same service and making same claim. Now, isnt there a logic flaw in all thes claims: google can only list sites from top to bottom and from page 1 to page X. So at the end of the day, there has to be sites, either site A or B --- or Z, all of whom use my seo service, got to be at the bottom. there is no way to list site horizontally so that everyone seems to be a winner, or unless you list all sites in a circle so that there is no beginning or end, ie, no first and no last.

I work for a company who specialise in SEO whilst running my own business. It is possible to appear in the top pages but nobody can really hit top spot everytime. For the UK market I aim for top 10 results in specific keywords/phrases but out of my target list I expect 50% in top 10 (page1), 25% in top 2 pages and 25% below top 3 pages and requiring further work after 3 months of a 6 month campaign. Within a 6month campaign I would expect 60% page1 30% top 3 pages and 10% failure (below top 3 pages) for my target keywords/phrases.
BUT a lot does depend on the selection of keyword/phrases and competition and popularity of keyword/phrases.

After all that rubbish I have just uttered in my humble opinion it is possible but not always.

We do SEO, and don't make a 'number 1' claim very often, depends on the keyword/phrase you are targetting - would be easy with some, virtually impossible with others! Normally aim for 'first page' eg. top 10.

True. But there are lots of different keywords/phrases, it's not like everyone has to be ranked on the same ones. Also in practice, an SEO company doesn't tend to have the privilege of everyone in the same industry all coming to you, would be nice if they did. In reality, it is a contest between a number of SEO firms, so may the best man win...

Thanks guy for the whats inside about SEO...
the iste in question is a gift site selling gifts that are also offered on dozens of others sites. i reckon all of then would be using the same kws if you are selling the same thing and want people to find you, eg, you wont use 'dust bin' as kw on gift sites unless you truely are selling dust bin as gift?
so if same products then kws would be the same regardless whether it is one SEO company doing all gift sites or each SEO company does it for one site. and if all the same SEO technique are working then all sites would seem to be a winner, well, you then back to square one: all winner simply means no winner.

Paul: what do you mean by 'contest between SEO firms'? would it be contest to win customers or would it be contest on the google front? Thanks.

I meant a contest to get the highest ranking.

So is this your gift shop site? I'd say that the term 'gift shop' would be very hard to promote, but each individual product or shop section can be promoted independently. I understand what you mean by "then would be using the same kws if you are selling the same thing" but that's the problem, promoting ALL your keywords is impossible (or expensive!) so each shop would only be able to channel efforts into a proportion of keywords. So one or all shops will not be "equal number one". I've promoted a gift shop before and we concentrated on more diverse phrases like 'leonardo figurines', and 'dog figurines' rather than 'gifts' and 'buy gifts' etc.

Also remember that a lot of keywords are not actively promoted, and so even if all the shops cancel each other out, then they will still be above all of the shops/sites that aren't actively promoting.
