I've been asked by a client if I can add "send this page via email" functionality to their website where users can send the url of the page their on to friends etc.

My concerns are that by adding the ability to send emails directly from the website that we would be opening the flood gates to bad bots which use the script to send spam.

I don't intend to code the script myself, I'll go with an off the shelf solution (if I can find the right one) but so far I have been unable to find one which uses verification - image based or otherwise.

Am I right to be concerned or is the llikelihood of this function on a small website being exploited slim?

If anyone has had any experience of this, knows any good solutions or would just like to offer an opinion I love to hear it.

A simple option may be an email ink which pre-inserts a subject line & the URL in the body of the message. Email is then sent as usual via Outlook etc.

If a script-based solution is needed, then I'm not sure - many content management systems have this built in, but haven't seen this as stand-alone solution.

PS: yes, you're right to be concerned - unprotected mail scripts are a big risk on shared serves & can result in sites being suspended to safe-guard the shared hosting environment.
