We had this prob here before where jpeg images would only save as a bmp, turned out that all was needed was to delete the internet cache (IE6>tools>internet options>delete files>tick>ok)as we found by looking at the ms knowledgebase website.

hope this helps your problem

Okay, I've posted a few times on this subject - to say how I run Windows 98se and can see and save these images fine in their original format. Well - guess what? I just bought a new computer, running XP, and now I can only save images as BMP's!!! It's not a chaching matter, as I'm seeing this on sites I've never been to before. Rhea

The problem IS a caching problem of some sort visibly apparent in Internet Explorer 6 on XP (i'm not sure about other versions of IE). If you delete all temporary files and cookies first then visit a subdomain address, then recheck the cache you will find that nothing gets stored whatsoever by IE6 - no html, no stylesheets and no jpgs or gifs. That the images aren't saveable as the correct extension is just one of the symptoms of this problem.
I've been testing a website on-site in a subdomain prior to final release and the result is that images do not load until sometime after the text appears and it looks bad. The images im using are all less than 10k so we're not talking big. I know for fact that exactly the same design works without problem when not within a subdomain. Maybe preloading the images would get round the problem of the images appearing too late but i suspect the images still wouldn't be cached . I also suspect it takes longer for DNS to resolve the subdomain addresses than it would a non-subdomain address which could explain the delay in loading.

Although far from ideal the simplest solution is to avoid using subdomains in the first place (at least for storing images anyway).
