One thing that diminishes their value to the spammers is to make your stats pages inaccessible by password protecting it and putting it as an exclusion in your robots.txt so that the search engines spiders don't associate your site with the ****** (fill in your own expletive)
There is value to blocking the source IP addresses, as the machines are either owned or compromised by the spammers and may be re-used for spamming at a later date, but rules in your .htaccess which deny access to referrers containing the word "poker", "casino" and any other types of url that are unlikely to ever legitimately refer to your site is helpful for future-proofing.
I hope this helps.
