Marc.
I have observed and investigated these referalls in depth and as far as I! can see then this poster is 'spot-on'... they are looking for a 'quick fix' to inbound link popularity...

OKies,

I've blocked their IP's the other day and as suggested in an earlier post, it did CENSORED all. I've not got email addies on my site so I'm sure it's pointless coming back, I've now got about 200% more sites and sub domains coming with about 5x the amount of hits so surely they would stop about now if it was for email spamming, I think the only thing left would be for backlinks as suggested by insomni.

So.. any clues as to how to stop these little thing-me-bobz?

EDIT: language

Well, the first thing you can do is to curb your language.

Indeed - no need for words like that. Infact that's just awful.

One thing that diminishes their value to the spammers is to make your stats pages inaccessible by password protecting it and putting it as an exclusion in your robots.txt so that the search engines spiders don't associate your site with the ****** (fill in your own expletive)

There is value to blocking the source IP addresses, as the machines are either owned or compromised by the spammers and may be re-used for spamming at a later date, but rules in your .htaccess which deny access to referrers containing the word "poker", "casino" and any other types of url that are unlikely to ever legitimately refer to your site is helpful for future-proofing.

I hope this helps.

Indeed, it's not pointless - many people have their web stats online. Also, we've mentioned the site names here. It increases their Google rank by having links visible online.

Just proves the old adage: "There's no such thing as bad publicity."
