| Getting Netthe.net to update nameservers Hi,
I'm doing some work for our local parish council, including hosting their site. Currently their domain is held with netthe.net. The parish clerk has asked them to update the nameservers twice in the last week, and she's had no response at all. Any ideas on how to make them sit up and take notice, or anyone else had problems like this? I note that they have a transfer (out) fee of 9.95 as well, so even threatening to move the domain won't help as they'll still be quids in, even if they did take any notice...
I'd rather cut and run and put the domain on 123-reg so I can control it, but it's not my call (yet).
Cheers for any advice,
Crispin |

| While they dont list a contact phone number, their domain registration lists this one:
+44 0845 200 20 20
Worth a phone call

| Thanks Matt - I'll probably need to get the clerk to phone them as I'm not the owner of the domain, but I'll pass this on.
Cheers,

In order for netthe.net to build and host your website on our servers we need to have control of your domain name (n.b. the domain name will still belong to you).
| Well, that's a laod of rubbish to start with. Sounds like they haven't heard of repointing dns addresses or else conveniently forgot about it.

| Vger - though I agree with what your saying, a lot of companies find it easier just to say that to customers - as the whole process of explaining how to adjust the DNS records via whatever control panel can be tedious - especially to people who have absolutely no clue with computers.

| WHAT?!!!
I've just read the terms and conditions: Quote: |
Note that within the last 30 days of the registration the Naming Authority will `lock` domains preventing transfers at that time. Payment for the next year will therefore need to be paid to netthe.net at that time before the transfer can take place.
| So not only do you have to pay a transfer fee, you also have to pay for another year's registration! Luckily it's more than 30 days before the end of the registration period, but then: Quote: |
2.6 In order to complete the transfer any domain names, netthe.net require that the Customer sends us something in writing by post or by fax (not email) stating the domain name. For .uk domain names we will also require the IPS tag. For other names the Customer must ask their new host to initiate an Automated Transfer request.
| The customer has to *write* to netthe.net to allow a domain to be transferred?! This is getting silly. I expect that before they'll release the name I have to turn thrice upon a full moon, whilst reciting the Lord's Prayer in Nordic. :-( |

If so, you could pay Nominet the UK domain registry to move the domain away for you to another registration agent. It costs £15+VAT and will no doubt be done quicker than netthe.net. Details on the Nominet site...

| Thanks MrBen.
I've got the clerk to send a IPS TAG request email to netthe.net, but that was yesterday evening, and I don't hold out much hope of them taking any notice of this either...
Has anyone done a transfer through nominet rather than through the agent as MrBen suggests? Was it easy/quick/painful? I'm just preparing myself! |

| I've done a forced transfer with Nominet on many occassion.
It's quick and painless.
Just pay the £15+VAT, send them the relevant details... a few days later, it's changed.

| Excellent - seeing as there's still no news it looks like I'm going to have to do the forced change thingy. The problem is that I'm not the registered owner of the domain, but acting on her behalf. Looking on the Nominet site, it says that the only 'authorised' people are lawyers, accountants and trademark agents. I'm none of these (and proud of it!) - what are their checks like? I actually hope they are good - as I don't want anyone snaffling my domains without my say-so, but in this instance it would be easier if they go 'yeah, whatever - but if the registrant kicks up we'll send the boys round'? |

| Get the actual Registrant (owner) to give you authority in writing.
Then go ahead. |

| You don't need to do that. Just guide the person how to do it over the phone.
Nominet get very concerned when people not listed as the registrant get involved in a transfer - from my experience anyway.

| Do they not like "agents" or "administrators" then ? |

| Quick update, did exactly as you suggested ChrisEvans at 7:30 this evening. Guided the clerk through the process over the phone. The IPS TAG should be updated sometime soon. I'm presuming that when I attempt a transfer in to 123-Reg, a security email will be sent to the Clerk - not netthe.net? |

| Sounds like the wrong thing your pushing for there.
Did you fill out that form?
No security message should be sent - you merely get the clerk to provide proof that they own the domain.

| Sorry, I didn't fill out the form, the clerk downloaded it and was going to fill it out this evening. I thought it was just basic admin stuff, like name/address and proof that she was who she said she was. I was referring to 123-reg sending a security email. The following is from https://www.123-reg.co.uk/ukdomain_guide.shtml: Quote: |
The Administrative Contact for the domain will be sent an email by 123-reg containing a link and password to confirm the transfer. PLEASE NOTE that they will have to log in to your control panel to confirm this transfer. If the Administrative contact is not you, please ask them to forward this email to you to authorise.
| I wasn't sure who who would be listed as the admin contact for the domain - Netthe.net or the Clerk. Does the form include new admin contact details then?
Sorry if I seem confused - I've not had to deal with stuff like this before. Give me some code and I'm a happy bunny! |

| Make sure you give Nominet the correct email address to use (I think they ask for it) - then everything will be ok.

| Just thought I'd give a quick thankyou for time and advice - the domain name did finally get transferred without any further hassles! |
