The real question is - why would a bunch of supposedly grown men want to compete over a tiny, battered, little urn which may (or may not) contain a small amount of ash from a cricket stadium that burned down a long time ago, but may equally contain ashes from someone's fire grate?

Well I suppose you could say that about almost any sport. Why play football and train, play games all season for a trophy at the end of a season? So the answer is it's a sport and the trophy almost is secondary to the competition. In the case of the Ashes it's more about national pride than the actual urn.

Because sport is fun and fun is the essence of life for many people.

Well done Australia (he says through clenched teeth). We revelled in our rare triumph last year and we must be gracious in defeat. That's what sport's all about.

Sport is about money, anyone who argues otherwise is living in the past.

Agreed, and that's why I have no time for the Prima Donnas of todays' sport. I remember hearing on the news before Christmas of the death of an old Hungarian football player (a national hero), Ferenc Puskas - who died in poverty in a bleak mental asylum suffering from dementia. But they gave him a state funeral - so I guess that's okay.

That's not true, I love sports. Good exercise, fun, and winning! It's all about competition and male testosterone. Hence women don't usually understand the fuss about sport or winning.

Apart from the ones that play sports? Commercial sport is all about money. Which sounds obvious enough I suppose, but it wasn't always entirely about money.

Just because you love sports doesn't mean there isn't some "top level" organisation in those sports interested in marketing, promotion and, ultimately, money. The Ashes is about sponsorship, coverage rights and huge amounts of revenue. National pride is just a convenient marketing tool to maximise the profits.

I'm cynical about so called "top level" sports... does it show?

Well, that's just dismissed all of the tens of millions of women in the world who regularly play sports of one kind or another.

Well said! From what I hear on the news FIFA has to be one of the most corrupt organisations in the world, always tainted by one scandal or another.

Wink

Hi All very amusing what a fuss over a silly little urn and a game with 3 match sticks 22 yards away from 3 other match sticks. A willow bat and a ball that gets hmmmmmm scratched a lot well alledgedly. Umpires who cant umpire but want large sums to retire oh well Im a bit of cynic. This is a great forum. Its very sad people cant be polite it costs nought. In closing Happy New Year to one and All

Oh I love cricket

Peter

I knew I was going to regret posting anything in this forum. I should have known better than to post anything at all. Sorry.

Dont regret posting. Some people dont like/see the point in cricket or sport.... and then some of us do!

I have a flight to Melbourne tomorrow where I will be seeing a lot of ozzies that I taunted last year when we won the ashes - im not looking forward to this year

Well I spent much of my time gloating to the Ozzy rels about their defeat. England would have to lose just before I go on hols down under wouldn't they. I can sense their smugness in their emails but I know they are holding back until I get there

Sport is just an enjoyable thing for me. I like to watch it, sometimes I like to partake. Nothing more or less.

maybe England will be lucky, it's raining in Sydney this morning, so play will be either delayed or not go ahead today if it doesn't stop.
