Sub-domains and full ssl

I know how sub-domains & shared ssl work (by placing content into /var/www/html) but how does this work with a full ssl?

can I have a full ssl "https://ww.mydomain.com" and a subdomain "http://shop.mydomain.com" which uses the main domain's ssl?

would this work? would there be any problems?

or do I need to buy a separate full ssl for the sub-domain?

Its a different domain name so another SSL cert is required. That is unless you purchase whats called a wildcard SSL cert but this does carry a premium.

ssls apply to everything after http:// so that http://domain.com and http://www.domain.com need different ssl certs.

Ah yes - that's what I had feared. Thanks for both your posts - that's clarified things!

If you setup the subdomain in /var/www/html/subdomain/ then you can use the full SSL for subdomain by diverting secure subdomain traffic to:

https://www.domain.com/subdomain/...
