And to top it all my webmail is working now too...

Will need to sit down and think this all through. Would it be worth me writing this up?

That explains a lot I suppose. But why is that?
PHP5 is explicitly enabled at the moment using .htaccess. I guess you have enabled it in your .htaccess for the main site, but not for the subdomain.

Masterplumber - a write-up of this would be most useful. Glad you got it working in the end...

I didn't see any of the PHP issues you encountered when I installed Drupal in subdomains, however - not sure why.
