Basically Google will replace your own 404 page with their customised one.
The way around is to have your 404 page more than 512 bytes.
Does anyone know offhand whether our UH default pages qualify for that ?

Internet explorer has been doing that for years anyway, replacing small error pages with its own content-

UH default error page looks to be 765 bytes so will avoid this. It is worrying that competitors content might appear on your (supposed) website.
