Changing my reseller webmail app?

Hello there... I have reseller space with United Hosting and they provide a default online webmail app called SqurrelMail for my and my clients websites.

It's perfectly fine for my clients, but I do use my webmail everyday and the thing is I'm finding it increasingly hard to use it everyday as it's a little too basic for me... So I wondered, is it perfectly fine for me to install another third party one and use that as my main online email center?

If so, what options are there? Would really like a decent, solid (preferably free) online email client I could connect to my reseller space to use for organising my emails...

Any ideas/info/experiences? Cheers...

I'd recommend looking at Google Mail - you can set it up so it handles all your email (bypasses UH completely) and is entirely online. UH can help with setting up the MX records correctly.

I do use GoogleMail for my personal account and I must admit, this is something I would like... But the only problem I find with GoogleMail is that it lacks folders for organisation. In SqurrelMail I currently have lots of folders setup where I keep all the emails I need to keep...

...or is this bad? Should I just use something like Backpack to keep my info together, and just delete the emails when they're no longer important. But it is good to store conversations with clients...

Also... is it possible with United Hosting to have my email goto to GoogleMail... But say, for example, I have the site recoilmedia.co.uk with United Hosting... And I've got two emails for it, which are me @ domain.com and other @ domain.com- can United Hosting do it so me @ domain.com can go to a me @ googlemail.com and have other @ domain.com go to a other @ googlemail.com account? ... if that makes sense. As I have another guy working for me, and I want him to have their own googlemail email interface too.

You can set up Google Mail so it acts as your mail server. UH would disable mail services at their end (you would not set up emails in Ensim, not use UH for mails) and all mail is handled directly via Google - you just need to alter the MX records accordingly. This also means that emails are not marked "somebody@googlemail.co.uk" but are "somebody@yourdomain.com".

Downside is that you lose MailFoundry and if you have any email issues, you'd have to sort them out with Google. But so far, their set-up seems to have worked well.

A related question ... I have a client who uses nigel@uhhostedsite.co.uk which is redirected to his nigel@sky.com address (Sky are his internet provider) and he uses Outlook Express to sent and receive these. Although in Outlook Express his 'sent from' address is set as "nigel@uhhostedsite.co.uk", Sky seems to showing the resulting emails as having come from "nigel@uhhostedsite.co.uk on behalf of nigel@sky.com".

Is the answer then to suggest he uses GoogleMail as Terra mentions above, and he can then use Outlook Express to pick these up as previously?

Google Mail is completely online, so I don't think Outlook Express would work - unless he forwards a copy of all his emails to his sky account but that could be messy. Isn't there an option with Sky to use UH as outgoing mail server?

Google Mail can be used with an email client - I pick up all mine using Thunderbird and rarely collect it through the website. So Outlook Express can do the same. Have no experience configuring it to work with UH accounts though.

Thanks for your replies people... I've now got it Google Apps associated with my domain name and am using Google Mail for my email client. It's so bloody good! The whole Apps package is... Especially Google Docs... I truely am completely online now and it's nice to know everything is in one place.

Also... I was investigating this... Apparantly Google Mail can interact using IMAP. I don't know much about this, but apparantly you can use an email client like always, but your actions are replicanted on your online email - so everything is synced... From what I can tell anyhow...

Please... If I'm wrong, please tell me! ... I'd really like it set up where I can have Apple Mail on my computer to check my Google emails but it not really affect whats going on online - if that makes sense.

Hi littlejim.

IMAP basically means you read your email remotely through a compatible email programme (Pegasus was my choice) without needing to download it to the computer - all the mail stays on the server until you either delete it or download it via POP.

As an example, I have found it useful in the past to use IMAP to read mail on my laptop and on my home PC when working from home, and then download everything via Outlook when in the office.

However, when replying to or sending mail, I did need to remember to copy myself in on anything I wanted a copy of in the office, though, since by using an email client at these other locations, the local 'Sent' copy stayed in my email programme.
I have to say I've never been bothered by this enough to find out whether any other mail programme, or mail service, would be any different.

Hmm... I question if IMAP is really what I want/need... If I can get GoogleMail working correctly, I think this will be just fine for me.

Does anyone here recommend a really good domain name registrator? I'm currently using LCN.com and though I like them, they lack CNAME support and a few other things that I could really do with now.

Who do you use? And why? ... and is it easy to transfer all my .co.uk names from LCN to another?

Sky have outsourced their email to Google so he is infact already using the Google Mail platform. The Google Mail platform supports secure POP3, IMAP and SMTP so you can use whatever mail client you like.

When you send messages through the Google Mail SMTP server your Google account (whether that be your Gmail account or your Sky account) details will be appended to the email as the "sender" for tracking purposes. Some mail clients decide to show this instead of the usual From, or show it in conjunction with the From (hence the "email-address-1 on behalf of email-address-2" message).
