Text editor required

Can anyone recommend a good (free) PC-based text editor? I don't need whistles and bells, just a very simple editor that allows quick and efficient editing of basic text documents. I want one that leaves the text file exactly as it was (plus edits), ie doesn't increase the filesize by adding extra end of line characters.

Thanks.

TextPad should be one of them.

Doesn't get any simpler than Note Pad - but then there's Text Pad, PS Pad, Crimson Editor etc. and the essential Win Merge for file comparisons side by side.

most of the time I use word since it handles text files perfectly well. But yes, textpad, notepad and many others out there.

Send a message via MSN to Alex.
Notepad++ is pretty good editor.
You can also install it on a memory stick.

I only ever use NoteTab Pro. The Pro version is not free, but there is a Lite version, too. Award-Winning NoteTab Text Editors and HTML Editors

What Red-Defender said. I use the Pro version too - the Lite has less features, e.g. no line numbers
