Fade OUT effect in Flash

Having got a fade-in Flash effect set up for a client- where you hover over various buttons and an image fades into view) I now need some more complex functionality.

They now want the image that fades in to fade out at the same speed when the user hovers over a different button (i.e when the user moves off the first button and effectively kicks off the fade-in procedure on a second button).

In other words, the first image fades out at the same time as the second image fades in. (and not only that but they need to fade in and out over the same visual area)

Not sure if this is possible at all, if there's a quick way of doing this?

I heard from a few people that you can only really do it with ActionScript- but I've tried using the various ActionScript solutions posted on the web and none have worked so far...

My own ActionScript is shaky, so when I need something like that I just go to a freelancer site & get it written - they can usually supply it quickly and at reasonable price. Just a thought - learning ActionScript can take time, so if you're busy there's no harm in outsourcing.

There isn't an easy way to do this — you either need to script it or employ an ungainly ballet of movieclips. You could try searching the 'movies' section on flashkit.com, since you might find something you can copy and modify, but if that doesn't work you'll probably just have to hire someone to do it for you. Should only take a good coder an hour or two, depending on the exact specifications of the final product.

If I lived down the street I would probably do this for a few pints, but sadly ...

PS: Just to add - fading in / out at the same time - we tried this on a project, but the two merged images looked weird. So in the end we decided to fade image out to white & then fade other image in from white, so basically had a white frame in the middle. Just try overlaying two images with 50% transparency in PhotoShop - depending on the images, this can lead to unexpected results.

in out in out fade it all about...

I'm sorry to say its sounds like you are out of your depth. You have a big learning curve ahead of you. If you learn action script you can do most anything want. But if you ain't a real programmer then you will struggle badly with action script. YOU have to work out the logic for this yourself and if you can't work the logic then you will have to get someone else to do it for you. And since your client is asking for extras each time they see it, you have allowed a bottomless pit to open up before you.

Here's one I did some years ago. I haven't touched flash since so I'm not inclined to get involved as I suspect it will be way too time consuming. Not much help really. Best you go to flashkit and put out a request for coder with a specification. But get your client nailed on the spec before you do it or you will be paying more than once.
